Warehouse security audit: what is reviewed

Warehouse security audit: what is reviewed

A security review of a warehouse asks one question: how easy is it for goods to disappear or be damaged, and who would notice? It looks at physical protection, procedures and people.

Access control

Who can enter the warehouse, through which doors and at what times? Auditors check gates, locks and key management, visitor and driver rules, and whether outsiders can reach storage areas. Doors that are propped open during loading are a common weakness.

Keys and locks

Are keys numbered, logged and returned? Are spare keys controlled? Who can open the high-value area and is it recorded? Weak key control is often the simplest route for loss.

Cameras and alarms

Cameras should cover entrances, the dispatch area and high-value storage, with recordings kept long enough to be useful. Alarms should be tested, and someone must be responsible for responding to them.

People and rights

Everyone should have access only to the areas their job requires. Auditors review who has system rights to change stock, who can approve write-offs and whether former employees still have access.

Fire and safety

Fire extinguishers, exits, stacking safety, storage of hazardous goods and electrical risks. They protect people and goods and are often required by regulations.

Handling and storage conditions

Temperature, humidity, pests, water damage and the way goods are stacked. Goods can be lost without anyone stealing them.

Processes at the weak points

  • Loading and unloading, when goods are most exposed.
  • Waste, packaging and returns areas.
  • Night and weekend access.
  • Handling of high-value or easy-to-sell items.

What to do with the findings

A short self-check

  • Can anyone walk into the storage area unnoticed?
  • Do you know how many keys exist and who holds them?
  • Can you see yesterday's recording of the dispatch door?
  • Is there a clear rule for night and weekend access?
  • Are high-value goods stored separately and counted more often?

Link security to counts

Security weaknesses show up in counts as repeated shortages in the same area or item group. Compare count results with the security picture. Patterns that match are usually the first place to strengthen controls.

Rank them by risk and fix the cheap, quick ones first: key logs, closed doors, clearer rules. Larger investments, such as cameras or fences, should follow the risks you have actually found.
